5 reasons to go to Quaker meeting (number 5 is a surprise)

Updated 9 July 2026

Quaker meeting for worship involves sitting together with others, either in a room or online, and trying to access stillness and silence in order to listen deeply. The aim is to hear what love and truth are saying to us, which many Quakers understand as God speaking in our hearts. That's pretty vague, though. Why specifically might you want to try meeting for worship for the first time?

After the Gathering: 11 ways to live out our Quaker faith in the world

Updated 17 February 2020

I left Yearly Meeting Gathering with a sense of hope for the future. It took me a while to identify this, given that the daily news discourages a feeling as impertinent as hope. This Yearly Meeting Gathering was the culmination of a three-year arc looking at living out Quaker faith in the world, and it felt like many seeds for change were sown. Which of these seeds will grow? Which will take root? Which will flourish for years to come?

5 ways to witness for peace

Updated 6 February 2024

We have all watched in horror as thousands of civilians are killed and displaced in Gaza, in response to the atrocious attacks by Hamas in Israel on 7 October. As Quakers in Britain we have felt compelled to speak out and take action and Friends across the country have too.

Faith groups and human rights agencies across the world have called on the international community to act immediately to secure a ceasefire and work to ensure humanitarian aid and access.

5 reasons to celebrate the work of nominations committees

Updated 4 July 2024

I fell in love with nominations when I started to work for Britain Yearly Meeting. In that role I was secretary to Central Nominations Committee, the committee that nominates Friends to coordinate Quaker work across Britain. This includes roles developing Quaker communities, supporting peace and social witness work, building connections with other faiths, as well as roles that help our faith directly, such as clerk of Yearly Meeting.

Why should we protest against DSEI?

Updated 3 August 2023

In 2019, when I was 15, I attended a protest against the Defence and Security Equipment International arms fair (DSEI) alongside hundreds of peace activists, many of whom were Quakers. We gathered outside the ExCel centre in London to block the entrance, share art, sing, and hold meetings for worship in remembrance of the countless victims of war.

A youthful Yearly Meeting

Updated 1 March 2023

Children and young people are a vital part of Yearly Meeting. They gather to look at its themes in age-appropriate ways, build community, explore Quaker faith and practice, experience worship and prayerful decision-making, and of course have lots of fun in a safe space.
