The current political crisis is a failure of leadership right across UK politics. In both Parliament and Government we have seen a lack of forethought. Each move appears to be in reaction to current events, not a pre-considered strategy. We needed leaders with integrity and courage, and we found leaders prepared to gamble with the wellbeing of the country.

Sasha's letter was read at this year's International Conscientious Objectors Day reflection, where we give thanks for all who resist the drumbeat of war and instead prefer to walk the path of peace. It can often feel like we are in an endless cycle of violence. Yet the cycle is broken each and every time someone exercises their globally recognised right and refuses to take part in killing.

The theme and service this year comes from Palestinian Christian women living in Palestine. We are all encouraged to pray for peace, justice and freedom of religion and movement. They ask us to pray especially for women, refugees, the sick, dying and grieving in their country, and also beyond.

When I wrote a blog post about Quakers in fiction, I was happily deluged with emails from readers who had come across Quakers elsewhere in their literary adventures. There were some wonderfully esoteric titles – for example the (sadly now out-of-print) Colin Writes to Friends House (1934) by Elfrida Vipont – and plenty of interesting observations.

Remembering Srebrenica: 30 years on
Friday 11 July 2025 will mark 30 years since the massacre at Srebrenica, when over 8,000 Bosniak (Bosnian Muslim) men and boys over 12, were murdered in the town in the worst single event of the Bosnian civil war of 1992–1995. Churches have come together to organise events to mark this anniversary, and we encourage Quakers to support them.
