Today, 6 February 2018, marks 100 years since the Representation of the People Act was granted Royal Assent and became law. It was a landmark piece of legislation. For the first time, women were explicitly included in the franchise for national elections. Many Quakers were involved in long-standing universal suffrage movements including Anne Knight, Alice Clark, Emily Ford, Hilda Clark, Helen Sturge and Edith Pye.

Margaret Fell (1614-1702) was a key figure in the development of the early Quaker movement, handling money, letters, and practical support for people who felt led to preach the Quaker message. Quakers were criticised for allowing women to speak, and so – while she was in prison for allowing a Quaker meeting to be held in her home – Fell wrote a pamphlet, Women's speaking justified. In it she went through Biblical examples to show that women could, and always had, shared the word of God.

What does Quaker community look like in 2023?
Quakers are a worshipping community. Our simple way of worshipping, of seeking the leadings of the Spirit for us, depends on us coming together in groups. It is a corporate act, a recognition that the body has many members. We can worship individually, of course – and many Quakers have our own personal spiritual practices – but we recognise that seeking God's will for us is best done together.

Preparing for Yearly Meeting through worship sharing
Yearly Meeting will be held at the end of April 2023. That may seem like a long time from now (it's only January!) but time steadily creeps on.We're asked to come to Yearly Meeting with hearts and minds prepared, and different people have different ways of preparing. Personally, I value worship sharing with other Friends. This is where members of a group share their thoughts and feelings on a particular subject, specifically within the structures of a period of Quaker worship.
