I was asked to write a blog post for Islamophobia Awareness Month and I felt unsure. I could write about the reports we (the Peacebuilding in Britain team) review as part of our ongoing conflict analysis. Like the latest Home Office report on hate crimes stats showing a 19% increase in religious hate crimes targeted at Muslims in England and Wales (excluding the Metropolitan Police Service). I could write about Scottish TV reporting that Muslim Engagement and Development Scotland are increasingly concerned with the “alarming rise" in Islamophobic incidents within recent months, following a wave of attacks. I could write about the racially targeted violence towards people seeking sanctuary in hotels, some of whom will be Muslim. But what I really wanted to do was to listen to Muslim friends and share at least one example of how it feels to be Muslim in the UK right now.

The Testament of Ann Lee (2025, dir. Mona Fastvold) is a biography of a woman who received a spiritual leading to found a new community. It takes us from her childhood in the mills of Manchester to her death as the leader of the Shaker movement in America. Like Quakers, Shakers are a branch of Protestant Christianity with a strong emphasis on God speaking directly to individual believers. The revelations people receive in the film are often comparable to those received by Quakers, both historically and today.

There are many ways to take action against the climate crisis. More than 100 Quakers recently took part in a mass lobby of Parliament at Westminster, urging MPs to take action. Others have been involved in school strikes, anti-fracking action and activism with the growing Extinction Rebellion movement.It's also important to remember that the sustainability we might call for in other areas of our lives applies to our Quaker meetings and meeting houses as well. In my role I've come across many ways meetings are trying to make their properties more sustainable – and seen a lot of opportunities yet to be taken, too. Here are six ways to make a difference.
