5 Take-aways from George Fox 400

In 2024, Quakers around the world marked the 400th anniversary of the birth of George Fox, the best known of early Quakers. Celebrating the life of one man was a challenge to the Quaker testimony to equality, so focus was on the significant contribution he and others made to the beginnings of the Quaker movement. It was a chance to look back at how the religion started and celebrate the continued work of Quakers around the world for peace, truth and justice.

More than three hundred young Quakers have contributed to a book summing up how they see Quakerism. Called Living our beliefs, it is available from the Quaker Centre Bookshop and as an ebook at www.yqspace.org.uk/living-our-beliefs. Playlists, video clips and line drawings accompany inspirational quotations and short passages.

Quiet simplicity of meeting houses celebrated

When Quakers built Hertford Meeting House in 1670 they were more likely to be persecuted than praised for their style of building. This week it is one of 17 Quaker meeting houses to be listed or upgraded and preserved for the nation by the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) on the advice of Historic England.
