Quakers gathered in Scarborough in July to plan for a new Yorkshire Quaker Camp starting next August

A mixed age group of Quakers from across Yorkshire met at Worfolk Cottage near Scarborough last weekend, to plan next summer's first Yorkshire Quaker Camp.

Imagining Yorkshire Quaker Camp next year with Friends gathering for fun and social and spiritual activities.

The aim of the Camp is to build joyful multigenerational Quaker community in Yorkshire, through shared meals, worship, music, dancing and fun in beautiful natural surroundings.

The weekend modelled this with various fun activities – beach games, board games, ping pong, swinging in the hammock, and even a dip in the sea for two! The group also shared meal preparation and clearing, worship, walks and time alongside each other as well as group discernment regarding how to plan for the camp.

There was an atmosphere of gentleness, joyfulness and fun throughout the weekend, with deep attentive listening and light-hearted laughter in equal measure.

Perhaps the best summary came as we closed the weekend with the youngest member, age 12, writing a group minute in the visitors' book. Each person took their turn to contribute a sentence, sometimes modified by the group as a whole, including the clerk herself, until all that needed to be said and unsaid was on the page and she signed it 'in and on behalf of the Planning Meeting'.

Yorkshire Quaker Camp will take place at Fell Edge Farm, near Ilkley from Friday 8th to Monday 11th August 2025. More details, and bookings information will be publicised soon.
