Quakers Expand Youth Work Across Britain
Quakers in the West of England are recruiting a new Youth Development Worker – one of a number of new YDWs who in the coming months will expand our work with children, young people and families across England and Scotland.
The new role will not only continue to nurture the Quaker youth community but also help Bristol Quakers expand their peace education programme in schools.
"Our brilliant volunteer-led Peaceful Schools Project invites older primary-age pupils to learn how to mediate conflicts amongst their peers," explained Kirsty Philbrick, the Children and Youth Development team leader in Quaker Life. "The programme also supports younger pupils to understand the value of living in harmony with others and develop the skills to build healthy relationships."
"It's more important than ever to expand this work with so much societal division," said Jenni Harris, the coordinator of the Bristol Peaceful Schools Project. "The schools we currently work with really value our programme and we hope the new youth development worker will help us reach more primary schools so more youngsters learn peacebuilding and life-long conflict resolution skills."

Interviews for a Children and Youth Development Worker in Central England are being held next week and Friends in North West England, and South East Scotland are also in discussions. Across the UK, Local Development Workers are reporting a significant increase in the numbers of new attenders and in particular young adults and young families.

"Many new families tell us they're searching for a spiritual sanctuary for both themselves and their children – somewhere that feels safe – somewhere where there is stillness and simplicity and kindness. Youth development workers have the expertise to create the environment where everyone, regardless of their age can explore their inner lives and the values that matter to them. Also, one of the real joys of this work is providing a space outside of an educational setting where youngsters make those special friendships that go on to sustain them throughout all of life's ups and downs."
