Women who speak for God
21 February - 3 April 2022, Online
In this six-week course, we will explore the stories of female prophets in the Bible and how they appear in culture. How can we understand these narratives? How do they reflect our own experiences?
From Miriam and Deborah to Mary and Anna, there are women throughout the Bible who are named as prophets and give prophetic speeches. Who are these women who speak for God? What makes them prophetic?
Focusing on the passages about female prophets will give us a deeper understanding of how God calls people to prophetic work, in the Bible and now.
The course will draw on The Women's Lectionary: Preaching The Women of the Bible throughout the Year (Westminster John Knox Press, 2021), by Ashley M. Wilcox. It will include a combination of lectures and experiential activities, with small and large group discussions. We will use spiritual practices to empathize with these women and understand how they fit into the Biblical tradition.
The start date for the course is when the online content and discussion forum becomes available; you can work on this material at any time to suit you.
The live Zoom sessions are at 19:00-20:30 (UK time) every Wednesday during this period.
