Visions of Just Community
30 January - 5 March 2023, Online
What can the Gospel of Luke teach us about being a just community? This course offers an introduction to the central narratives of Luke's Gospel. What can it teach Quaker communities about Spirit-led activism and prophetic witness in the modern world?
Through the interlocking lenses of disabled theology, Classical history, feminist scholarship, and ancient myth, we will explore Luke's theological approach to power, stigma, and Empire. Luke the writer and storyteller will be placed in his Roman context, with thematic explorations of belonging, diversity, and reconciliation. Throughout, you will be encouraged to draw fruitful parallels between Luke's complex world and our own.
By the end of the course, participants will have the tools to apply the stories of Luke to a variety of situations and possess a rich understanding of the ways that Gospel teaching can inspire and sustain contemporary movements for social repair and peace.
The date range given above for the course is when the online content and discussion forum are live; you can work on this material at any time to suit you. The live Zoom sessions are at 19:00-20:30 (UK time) every Monday during this period.
