The History of the Book of Discipline
17 November - 1 December 2026, online
Quakers lived and practiced their faith as led by the spirit. How and where, then, did Friends come to acquire a Book of Discipline? What did the earliest Book of Discipline look like, and how has its content and relationship to Friends changed over space and time?
Over three, 90-minute sessions, participants on this course will explore the origins of the modern Book of Discipline in the seventeenth century, its proliferation across the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, and how the Book of Discipline was changed or adapted to fit the needs of different Quaker communities.
No prior knowledge of early Quakerism or the Book of Discipline are necessary to partake in this course.
