The Gospel of Mary: a friendly study group
13 January - 19 February 2023, Online
Did you know that there's a gospel attributed to a woman? Want to find out more? This is an opportunity to explore personal spirituality within a safe, mutually supportive structure where there are no right or wrong answers and everyone's equal.
The Gospel of Mary holds much in common with Quaker faith and practice, with its emphasis on direct experience of the divine within, the rejection of excessive rules & regulations, and the positive representation of women. The 'Friendly Study' method provides a non-hierarchical way to engage with this short but powerful text together, such that everyone's insights and lived experience are equally valued.
We use five set questions to reflectively consider and nurture our personal reactions to this gospel, then share our responses in small groups. The rich variety of our different viewpoints is warmly encouraged – no need to always agree! We will gradually explore all the text, then in the final session we look back over the whole gospel, asking how it relates to our own lives today. For more information about Friendly Study method, and The Gospel of Mary, including a new translation by course tutor David Curtis, visit the website www.thegospelofmary.org
The date period given for the course is when you are expected to interact with the online material and discussion forum; you can work on this at any time to suit you, The live Zoom sessions are at 19:00-20:30 (UK time) every Tuesday during this period.
