Spiritual Wisdom From Liberal Christianity

25 June - 23 July 2025

This course introduces learners to some of the hidden spiritual treasures of the Liberal Christian tradition. Over the course of five-weeks participants will be invited to learn about inspiring figures and theologies from, or in sympathy with, the Liberal Christian tradition.

The course will include explorations of:

  • The cosmic vision of the Rhineland Mystic Hildegard of Bingen and her contemporary resonance.
  • The life and work of Iolo Morganwg, the 18th century wild Welsh druid, radical intellectual, pilgrim and Christian mystic.
  • The free Christian pioneer and originator of the Unitarian flower communion, Rev. Norbert Čapek.
  • The radical implications of the Universalism of the 18th century mystic George de Benneville
  • The work of the twentieth century pacifist, Unitarian theologian, and Liberal Mystic, Sidney Spencer
  • Each weekly session is intended to help participants consider a dimension of contemporary faith, including the relationship between Christianity and other traditions, our spiritual response to nature, and our understanding of divine love. Running through the sessions will be the interlocking themes of mystical experience, the love of creation, the love of God, and a commitment to free conscience and social justice.

Friends will be invited to draw links between their own Quaker tradition, and wider traditions of Liberal mystical religion. This course will particularly appeal to Friends who work ecumenically or who want to deepen their understanding of radical strands of Christian life and practice.

The live Zoom sessions will take place every Wednesday at 19:00-21:00 (UK time).
