Preparing for Remembrance
4 - 11 November 2020, at home
We are preparing for Remembrance whilst bearing in mind that we are in times that invite us to find new ways to engage with big issues.
This year, Quakers are making white poppy-themed posters to display in their street-facing windows.
It will be an opportunity to reflect on the peace testimony, and express our commitment to the end of all war, in a creative and gentle way.
We encourage everyone to get involved and make a poster as 11 November approaches. To take part:
- Create a poster depicting white poppies, using whatever materials you like. Include a message of peace for passersby to read.
- Put it in your front window, perhaps alongside any posters supporting key workers and the NHS!
- Take a picture of your poster display, and email the photo in to photos@quaker.org.uk
We will share your pictures on the official Quakers in Britain social media channels. In this way, we can spread the spirit of peace and remembrance for all who have lost their lives in war, both in our localities and also through our national networks. For details of how to share your images and how we might use them see this short webpage.
Further Remembrance activities:
- Watch and share the free-to-watch YouTube documentary film War School, which looks at how schoolchildren are expected to uphold military values, and the role played by Remembrance and red poppies.
- Home educate younger members of your family (aged 14 and up) about militarism in Britain with this multi-media learning resource from QPSW.
- Order white poppies from the Peace Pledge Union website.
These activities were taken from the monthly Quaker faith in action newsletter.
Quaker faith in action is a monthly update about Quaker faith in action, with stories gathered from around the yearly meeting plus all the latest events, actions and resources.
