Quakers and LGBTQ+ History
18 February 2021
A presentation and discussion about the story of Quaker work for LGBTQ+ rights
At this event, words and images portray the trailblazing story of Quaker work for LGBTQ+ rights since the 1950s.
The story includes the pioneering Friends who compiled 'A Quaker View of Sex'; the founding of Friends Homosexual Fellowship; the landmark Quaker decision to embrace equal marriage in 2009, and everything in between.
The presentation is participatory without a leading speaker. Those attending (who wish to) will read the words for each image, so the story is told collectively, with different voices. There will be an opportunity for discussion afterwards.
The presentation is based on published books, minutes of significant meetings and newsletter articles.
This event is organised for LGBT History Month by the Quaker Gender and Sexual Diversity Community and the Quakers in Britain staff LGBTQ+ and Allies Group.
