Isaac Penington: Early Quaker With a Lasting Legacy

Isaac Penington was a significant figure in the early Quaker movement, but his legacy may not yet be fully realised. This course will explore his life, context, and writings, and consider the relevance of his message for Friends today.
Spanning the two key generations of the Early Quaker Movement, Penington spoke to those in his own time and has continued to 'speak' to Friends and seekers across the centuries. His message, language and witness are distinctive in ways that can both challenge as well as inspire us today. To understand his full contribution to the Quaker Way, we will explore the context he grew up and lived in, how he came to join Quakers and the depth and range of his writings, both defending Quaker experience and insights, as well as offering profound and moving spiritual counsel to nurture and support Friends in ways that can still resonate very deeply with 21st Century Friends.
This six-week course will be based on six live sessions using Zoom, backed up by online resources and a discussion forum. It will begin in December and end in January with a break during the holiday period.
The live Zoom sessions are at 19:00-20:30 (UK time) on Tuesdays 26 November, 3 December and 10 December 2024 then 7 January, 14 January and 21 January 2025.
