Holding in the Light: What Does It Mean?
27 January 2025, Online
Quakers often talk about holding something or someone in the Light, or upholding a person or situation, when people in other religious traditions might talk about prayer or sending good thoughts or energy. What does it mean and why do Quakers say this?
This one-off session will explore the Quaker expression 'holding in the Light'. What do we hold in Light? What effect does it have, if any – on us and on whatever we hold in the Light? How does this practice relate to other kinds of prayer such as contemplation or intercession? There will be space for your own questions as well as these.
During the 90-minute session, we will discuss some ideas and share some experiences, and also take time in silence to experiment with the practice. It may be especially helpful if you want to refresh your prayer life, if you have a role such as elder which involves upholding others, or if you have questions about the Quaker theology of prayer.
