Friend, Guest, or Family? Deep Hospitality in Quaker Communities

17 September - 15 October 2024, Online

In your Quaker community, who is central and who is excluded? If you were all living together, who would be one of the family or just a guest – or not even there? In this course we explore issues of hospitality and how to discover what's really going on.

Who has power in a Quaker community? By using the image of a household, and other metaphors, we will explore honestly and playfully the dynamics of our communities: what does it feel like to be included or excluded, what are the ways in which this happens, and how can we be hospitable to what is really happening?

This course builds on existing work by Rhiannon Grant and Windy Cooler. To find out more in advance you could read Rhiannon Grant's 2024 Pendle Hill Pamphlet Deep Hospitality or watch her related 2023 Powell House online keynote talk. You could also watch Windy's 2022 Quaker Theological Discussion Group presentation or read her 2023 article in Quaker Religious Thought.

The live Zoom sessions are at 19:30-21:00 (UK time) every Tuesday.
