Challenging Traditional Quaker Histories: Quakers and Enslavement
22 September 2026, online
Friends are known for their social justice work, but some Quakers also played a role in the transatlantic trafficking of enslaved people. This introductory session will explore what it means to 'challenge' traditional histories, focusing on the history of Quakers in relation to enslavement.
In this session, participants will be introduced to histories of Quakerism they may not have encountered before—in this session, the history of Quakers as enslavers—and discuss the legacy of Quaker participation in systems of oppression and subjugation.
This 90-minute session is comprised of a brief 30-minute lecture, followed by a period of engagement with primary source materials and group discussion. Participants will be encouraged to think about how this history connects to Quakerism in the present and to consider the legacies that remain in our society today. No prior knowledge is necessary for participation.
