Addressing the long-term trauma of war
25 November 2022, Online
War is over and the trauma lasts for years. This session will focus on helping vulnerable people, focusing on primary, secondary and vicarious trauma. We will discuss how to care for traumatised people as well as the importance of self-care when helping others.
In situations of violence virtually everyone is traumatised to some degree. The capacity needed to care for psychological trauma is less than 10% of what we need. This session will give an overview and introduction to how to help.
We will introduce the kinds of trauma suffered by vulnerable people, as well as the transmission of trauma and self-care. Specific examples will look at trauma among migrants. Examples will come from the work of The Coalition for Work with Psychotrauma and Peace, which has been working since 1995 to provide training and supervision of those working with vulnerable people in their own communities.
This session is one of a series Woodbrooke is running on the Quaker peace testimony in a time of war – what we can do? When you register you will get access to a resource page where recordings of the sessions are posted. Future topics include understanding war, supporting human rights and peace in Russia and challenging militarism with more topics to follow.
