The Mother of Quakerism
16 - 27 May 2023, Online
In this course, we will explore the life, writings and legacy of the 'Mother of Quakerism', Margaret Fell. We will look at the contribution she made to the formation of the early Quaker movement as an organiser, counsellor, lobbyist and writer.
By engaging with this material, you will gain a deeper understanding of the early Quaker movement, and an appreciation of the vital role Margaret Fell played in ensuring its survival. We will look at a selection of writings taken from her published works, including epistles, disputations, political addresses, and theological tracts. This will include her writings addressed to the Jewish communities in Amsterdam. Her relationship with George Fox will be explored and the nature of her legacy will be assessed.
The course includes three live sessions, using Zoom. In each of these sessions, there will be a guest speaker who has written about Margaret Fell. This will include Sally Bruyneel, who has written on Fell's theology, Joanna Godfrey Wood, who has looked at Fell's contribution to the development of Quaker spirituality and testimony, and Kristianna Polder, who has explored her relationship with and marriage to George Fox.
