Howard Thurman: prophet for the 21st century
21 September - 26 October 2023, Online
In this course we will explore the life and works of African-American theologian, Howard Thurman, often regarded as a prophet of a new religion, with an emphasis on finding common ground and transcending divisive aspects of creeds, races and cultures.
Thurman's writings, and the growing body of scholarship about him will be considered, and his influence on modern religious ideas will be assessed. How do his insights inspire us to move forward in our own times? Session will cover: Howard Thurman and (auto)biography; Thurman and spirituality; Thurman and Jesus; Thurman and freedom and justice movements in the U.S., and around the world; Thurman and Africa and Asia; Thurman and Quakers.
We will work through this material over a six-week period. In addition to online presentations and a discussion forum, there will be a weekly live session in Zoom providing an opportunity to talk about the themes covered and share reflections. If possible, participants are encouraged to obtain copies of two primary texts - Howard Thurman, With Head and Heart: The Autobiography of Howard Thurman (1979), and Howard Thurman, Jesus and the Disinherited (1949).
There will be some material to look at before the first session. We will email you around one week prior to the course with information about accessing the course, including this material, on our online learning platform (Moodle).
Live sessions take place on Zoom every Thursday at 19:00-20:30 (UK time)
