Hope as a Practice
27 September - 1 November 2023, Online
“Active hope is a practice, it is something we do, rather than have." Can hope be more powerful than simple optimism? What does it mean to 'practise hope'? How do we maintain a sense of possibility when things seem to be getting worse rather than better?
In this course we'll draw on the work of Joanna Macy to explore different aspects of hope as a practice, and think about how they speak to us as Quakers. We'll learn about the part that thankfulness can play in our capacity to acknowledge grief and develop a grounded approach to hope and social change. We'll reflect together on how to generate and renew hope to strengthen our collective capacity to bear witness in the world. Participants will also have the opportunity to try out practices together that they can then develop and deepen outside the course.
The sessions will take participants on journey through six different themes: opening to joy, holding grief, narratives of hope, cultivating hopefulness, and hope as social practice. Culminating with going forth into the world, renewed and committed to hopeful action. Some of the sessions will include contributions from guest speakers such as Mark Russ and David Gee.
Live sessions take place every Wednesday at 19:00-21:00 (UK time)
