Experiments with Truth and Power

3 - 24 October 2023, Online

Early Quakers saw a close relationship between truth and power. Gandhi coined a term for nonviolent action: satyagraha, which is often translated 'truth force'. What does it mean for us to live experimentally in relation to truth and power?

In this course, participants will each reflect on their own relationship to truth and power, and learn to think in new ways about how power is acquired and wielded in the world. Participants will complete a 'personal power inventory', and will also learn how to employ power-mapping as a prelude to working effectively for change. Participants additionally will learn about how early Quakers linked truth to power.

The four sessions of this course will guide participants through exploring helpful theories of power and nonviolence, and through considering how to apply these concepts towards working nonviolently for change. Whilst certain key readings will be referenced, doing those readings will be optional. There will be weekly live sessions, and time for reflection and online discussion will be encouraged between sessions.

There will be some material to look at before the first session. We will email you around one week prior to the course with information about accessing the course, including this material, on our online learning platform (Moodle).

Live sessions will take place on Zoom every Tuesday 19:00-20:30 (UK time)
